Mr John Menzies. 1888.

John Menzies a native of the Braes of Balquhidder, Perthshire. John started out as a herds boy and advanced to plough man. He came to Glasgow and was soon working behind many of the  bars in Port Dundas area. Large Scotsmen were very popular working in the pub in the city as they took no nonsense from anyone. Mr Menzies took over the Royalty Wine & Spirit Vaults at 22 Canal Street, Port Dundas, most of his customers were workers in that industrial part of Glasgow. At lunch time many of the drinkers were covered in soot. Free snacks were put on the counter at lunch times, oatcakes and cheese, just imagine it, hard working, sweaty artisans covered in soot with filthy greasy hands, eating and slurping pints of ale.
