In 1909 James Mearns was training for the Channel swim.

His father was a well known wine & spirit merchant in Queen Street, Aberdeen.

Young James Mearns was only 31 years of age when this photograph was taken, he stood at 5 foot 10 inches, 45inch around the chest and weighed 15 stone.

During his training he would always say he was nourished by "Bovril" he most likely have been sponcered by this company in his swimming career. For a year he would swim daily in the coldest weather, when snow was on the ground. During his swimming the Channel his feeding operations were supperintended by Dr. Watson of Bovril Ltd.
