The Shandon Bar sat at the corner of Gallowgate and Cubie Street. This was a very old pub dating back to the mid 1800s, the Waddell family owned the pub for many years before Arthur Murray took over in 1893. Matthew Bowman a military man had 9 years experience in the trade leaving for 6 years on service in the Royal Field Artillery before taking over the business from Mr Murphy in 1923.
For over 30 years Matthew continued a thriving business on the Gallowgate. Afterwards the pub came under control by the West of Scotland Taverns Ltd, the licence was held by Thomas Dick, he also took control of several pubs in the city including 179 London Road, 67 Cambridge Street, 222 Buchanan Street, The Ring Bar in 88 Whitevale Street and the Market Bar on the Gallowgate. Another manager many will still remember was George Russell he held the licence from 1965 to the 70s, he also took control of the Market Bar, Gallowgate and the Ladywell, Barrack Street.
